Video Conferencing: Not Yet Road-Tested?

Video Confererencing

While browsing around the twittersphere, we discovered two interesting, unrelated tweets posted on the same day within minutes of one another.

The first via @marcpickren: “Microsoft estimates that it saves $90 million per year through its use of video conferencing.”

And this one via @jasonfried: “Video conferencing is the highest tech with the lowest return. The phone is almost always a better option.”

On the one hand you have the likes of Microsoft singing video conferencing’s praises and on the other it’s labeled a runner-up to the telephone, which begs the question:

Is the road the video conferencing paved with good intentions and little real-world practicality?

We’ve all heard about the Cisco/Tandberg (Et tu, Polycom?), and Logitech/LifeSize deals and Panasonic’s upcoming Skype-enabled TV. Not to mention the fact that Oprah skypes-in many of her guests who can’t be physically present in her studio. (Notice: Oprah’s using it AND Skype’s brand’s name has become a verb to describe it—two indications that this thing is BIG.)

There are major dollars behind the video conferencing cause and I doubt that these players would bet on an unsure thing.

But the fact remains that some people fail to see the value. We took a quick poll of our family and friends and hung around on LinkedIn to get feedback on how people are using (or not using) video conferencing and from what we’ve seen, video conferencing is being used—heavily.

Perhaps, video conferencing still has that “new tech smell” and we’ll have to take it for a few spins around the block before it rides smoothly enough for everyone to jump on board. After all, it wasn’t long ago that the thought of making major purchases online was foreign.

What do you think?

From Bench Warmer to All-Star: 3D Takes the Spotlight in 2010

3D BasketballHere are some quick stats on 3D.

  • Drafted: 1890
  • Position: Technology; Entertainment
  • Career Highlights: Jaws 3D (1983) Muppet Vision 3D (1991) Nightmare on Elm Street 6 (1991) SpongeBob SquarePants 3D (2003) Beowolf (2007) Avatar (2009)

3D can be compared to a first-round draft pick in the technology field. Dating back to the 1800s we’ve always had high hopes for such an engaging tool.

And people like it. Ever the crowd-pleaser, when 3D gets on the court it delights one and all—transforming humdrum films and thrill rides into immersive experiences.

But, despite its likeability, 3D in the past is best characterized as a benchwarmer technology.

Sure, when it’s on the floor it’s great, but we don’t need it like we need our starter, like say, high resolution. When we have anything in low-res, we notice and we aren’t happy. We miss it. That’s why hi-res gets all the attention.

Well, watch out, high-res and any other “starter technology” because 2010 just might be the year 3D becomes a major player in the technology game.

3D is sick of warming the bench. Apparently, it has a new PR person and a new image to boot and we can expect some MAJOR upsets.

As we’ve said, when any technology moves to the home front, it’s considered mainstream, and we’ve heard the big buzz surrounding Panasonic’s much-anticipated Skype-enabled TV slated to release in the Spring, but Panasonic is also releasing a 3D HDTV around the same time. This move is a huge upgrade for 3D. Once a feature that could only be enjoyed during events (movies, trips to IMAX, amusement park visits, etc.)— 3D now has home court advantage. That’s a nice crossover. (more…)

video conferencing to the desktopThis prediction marks the halfway point of our 2010 AV predictions. So, let’s give a quick recap of the previous predictions:

Prediction 1: It’s all about the Core-Tried and True beats out Innovative

AV Prediction 2: Video conferencing goes Mainstream

AV Prediction 3: Price will be the Differentiator

AV Prediction 4: “Nice to Virtually Meet You”—Virtual Events Flourish

AV Prediction 5: The Dawn of Telework

This brings us to our 6th prediction that the boardroom will be only one option for video conferencing. From now on, anyone will be able to plop down just about anywhere they can pick up a connection (which is easy—even McDonald’s offers Wi-Fi) and launch a full-on video conference right from their desktop.

The bottom line is video conferencing as we know it is getting a facelift. Desktop video conferencing, video conferencing from the home, and even mobile video conferencing are just a few of the new faces popping up in the industry.

Become a Star!

We’re excited to see the 2010 increase in telework. In 2010 as the lines of work and home line blur, more people will enjoy the flexibility of splitting time between the office and the home.

Watch the quick video below where Tandberg’s Rick Snyder highlights the benefits of telework.

virtual events

Networks are important. (If you don’t think so, just tune into the countless AT&T/Verizon debates over whose network is the largest.)

Networks help us business people find new clients, partners, ideas and well, new business and social networking platforms like LinkedIn have definitely furthered our efforts in this vein.

But, online social networking is no match to the trade show. The trade show is where we get to bump fists with everyone who’s anyone in our industry. We get to chew on deep thoughts delivered by our industry’s finest and fill our goodie bags with business cards, pens, USB drives, business cards, paper weights, business cards and more business cards for us to follow up on everything we gathered during the show.

However, there’s a new way to network and it’s catching on: the virtual tradeshow. (more…)

AV Prediction 3: Price Will be the Differentiator

DifferentiatorWhen any new technology becomes common place, as we’re projecting with video conferencing, there will be lots of new players throwing their hats into the video conferencing ring—some good, some bad.

But, they’ll all have one thing in common: affordability.

Quality and rich feature sets will be important, but we’re coming to expect these as a standard—not a bonus—and we’ll shop around until we find the most affordable (and powerful) solution.

To this end, in 2010 video conferencing technologies will be plentiful and they’ll be affordable too.

This is great news because it allows the SMBs to leverage the best video conferencing or telepresence (a significantly more expensive investment) solutions. So, because more people are seeking video conferencing solutions, more providers will surface to provide solutions and in order to close the deals, these providers will have to be competitively priced.

AV Prediction 2: Video conferencing goes mainstream.

TVVideo conferencing—it’s not just for the boardroom anymore.

If you were still deliberating on whether or not video conferencing would sink or swim in 2010, deliberate no more because the verdict is in—video conferencing is on the rise.

Just look at the big buys that took place in 09 — Cisco/Tandberg and Logitech/Lifesize —companies like that don’t throw millions into businesses on a whim—it has to be a sure thing.

Still not convinced? Well, would you be convinced if you could video conference from your TV? Well, now you can thanks to new Skype-enabled TVs that will allow you to video conference right from your living room—no PC required.

And, it’s not just about savings and convenience when you add to this mix the unfortunate airline terror attempts:  more people are  looking for travel alternatives not only to cut costs, but also to feel safe.

So, in 2010, place all bets on video conferencing!
